What is the work like?
Signwriters and signmakers create signs for indoor and outdoor
display, and the artwork that goes on the sides of cars, lorries
and buses.
They design, manufacture and install street direction signs and
the huge range of signs that advertise shops, businesses and public
facilities. They might design and make flat, 2D signs or complex
3D or illuminated installations.
Traditionally, signwriters and signmakers used their drawing and
painting skills to produce hand-lettered signs in enamel paint.
Some still use this method - especially for pubs, traditional
settings and even for narrowboats on the canals.
It is more usual today, though, to combine these skills with computer-aided
design and manufacture, and materials such as vinyl, perspex,
aluminium, stainless steel and PVC.
Signwriters and signmakers can be involved in a range of tasks,
depending on the sorts of signs they produce. The work might involve:
" designing signs using computer software, which is then
linked directly to plotters and vinyl cutters to produce the finished
sign
" using solvent-based inks and high resolution digital printers
to produce printed vinyls and banners
" cutting out metal and plastic letters to create 3D signs
" bending glass into shape to create illuminated signs
" engraving, etching or hand decorating materials
" printing and applying graphics and livery to vehicles
" installing signs on site.
