The Waterloo Biofilter® system is well suited to communal and large-scale applications, including rural subdivisions, resorts, and campgrounds. Several options exist for large-scale installations including above-ground polyethylene (PE) tank treatment units and modified shipping container (SC) treatment units: the PE tanks are generally housed in a free-standing garage-type structure, the SC units are stand-alone combining Biofilter and building into one. The PE tanks are 7.5' diameter by 9' tall and are rated to treat up to 1,320 US gpd each. The SC units are available in 20'x8'x8' and 40'x8'x8' sizes, capable of treating up to 5,250 US gpd and 10,500 US gpd respectively. Existing communal systems in Canada are treating from 1,000 gallons per day to 33,000 gallons per day, including two small communities, golf course clubhouses and restaurants, schools, trailer parks, campgrounds, fishing resort, farm animal, landfill leachate, and food processing wastewaters. In Korea, a 90,000 gallon per day installation treats food processing and sewage wastewater from a large airline company with many restaurants and military bases also serviced. In addition, a custom remote monitoring system is used to monitor temperature and other operational parameters such as pump on-off cycles, alarms and flow rates, providing greater security for operators.
