Acid Fume Hood

 

Perchloric acid is a corrosive and oxidizing substance used in a variety of experiments. For safety reasons, the acid is kept inside fume hoods and traditional wet scrubbers from the exhaust capture the fumes. Unfortunately, over time, heat and shock sensitive crystals of perchloric acid can accumulate around these scrubbers posing a hazard to employees.
However, a new scrubber design in use at the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Building at Technical Area 3 uses a fine spray of water to provide more binding sites for the acid molecules that accumulate. The hood and scrubber are waterproof, and can be washed. This prevents any accumulation of the acid crystals or corrosion within the hood. Since the new scrubber design has no moving parts that wear out, this type of acid scrubber is expected to have a very long, useful life.
